PRACTICAL PLANNING FOR DECORATORS

Measure the surfaces.
Plan the materials.

Start with the surfaces and the specification, not just the floor area. Use the paint quantity tool alongside your own assessment of preparation, access, finishes and labour.

Tools for this work

Planning estimates, not contractor quotations

Paint quantity calculator

Estimate paint requirements using the tool’s stated inputs and coverage assumptions.

Know the limits. Quantity estimates depend on the measurements, coverage and coats supplied. Preparation, difficult access and professional labour require a separate assessment.

Practical guidance

Define the work before preparing your professional quotation.

Measure and label the surfaces

Record walls and ceilings separately, identify openings and note which surfaces are included. Keep trim and other specialist finishes distinct.

Agree the material assumptions

Specify the product, coverage and coats used in the estimate. Check the manufacturer’s guidance and condition of the surface before ordering.

Price preparation and labour separately

Describe repairs, protection, access, drying time, cleanup and exclusions. A paint quantity is not a complete decorating quotation.

Use our painting and decorating cost guide as a scope checklist for preparation, surfaces, materials and VAT—not as a fixed rate for your quotation.
